Dalawella Beach

A short walk from The Third Half, Dalawella Beach is one of the more laid-back stretches of coast in Galle. It’s known for its iconic rope swing that hangs from an overhanging palm — a favourite for photos and a small thrill to try. The beach itself is calm in the mornings, good for a swim when conditions are right, and lined with a handful of low-key beach shacks where you can pick up a coconut or a cold drink. It gets busier in the afternoons, so early mornings are the best time to visit if you want it mostly to yourself.

Galle Fort

Galle Fort is the unmissable centrepiece of any visit to southern Sri Lanka. Built by the Portuguese in 1588 and later expanded by the Dutch into the sprawling fortified city it is today, the Fort is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the best-preserved colonial fortresses in Asia. Inside its thick ramparts you’ll find a maze of cobblestone streets lined with boutique hotels, galleries, cafes, and jewellery shops — all set within beautifully restored Dutch and colonial architecture. Walk the ramparts at sunset for one of the best views on the southern coast, the Indian Ocean on one side, the fort’s red-tiled rooftops on the other.

Galle Lighthouse

Standing at the southern tip of the Galle Fort, the Galle Lighthouse is the oldest lighthouse in Sri Lanka and one of its most recognisable landmarks. The current white-painted tower dates to 1939, though a lighthouse has stood on this spot since the Dutch colonial era. It’s not open to climb, but it doesn’t need to be — the views from the surrounding ramparts and rocky shore are spectacular enough on their own, particularly at dawn or dusk. It makes for a great short walk from the Fort gates, and an easy photo stop on any visit to Galle.

Thalpe Natural Rock Pools

Tucked along the coastline just east of Galle, the Thalpe rock pools are a local favourite and one of the quieter swimming spots on the southern coast. Carved naturally into the reef, the pools fill with clear seawater and offer a calm, sheltered place to swim, snorkel, and float while waves crash against the rocks just beyond. It’s an especially good spot for children or anyone who prefers calmer water to the open beach. Best visited in the morning when the light is good and the pools are less crowded, it’s the kind of place you stumble upon and end up staying far longer than planned.

Frog Rock

Frog Rock — named for the large boulder at its base that bears an unmistakable resemblance to a frog — is a popular cliff jumping spot on the coast just east of Galle. The rocks here form a series of natural ledges and platforms above deep, clear water, drawing locals and visitors who come to leap from varying heights. It’s exhilarating, unpretentious, and completely free. There’s no signage, no queue, and no fuss — just a cluster of people taking turns and an audience cheering from the rocks. Not for the faint-hearted, but a lot of fun for those who don’t mind a bit of a jump.
